Brand identity often sticks with us longer than the products. A brand has to speak more the one language, being able to transcend across cultures. Helps to maintain consistency across a wide range of media. Can be done through icons/symbols that are recognised at a global level.
Retaining an identity over decades builds trust between client and customer. Simplicity can be key, more often then not its the most effective method to create iconic design.
